Kelowna United Soccer U14 Girls Provincial B Silver Medallists

Kelowna United Girls U14 team #2 finished #2 at Provincials this past weekend.  After finishing 3rd in league play the girls fought their way through TOYSL by defeating both Penticton and Vernon to move on to Provincials.  Their first game at Provincials saw them take on the Terrace Kermodes.  Terrace had beaten us 3-2 in a previous tournament but wouldn’t be so lucky this time around.  Midfielder Morgan Hughes drove a low shot past the Terrace keeper to give us our lone and winning goal part way through the first half.  The team worked hard the rest of the game to keep it out of our end, a stellar job by the defence; Olivia Wallis, Sierra Sanchez, Alicia Kessler and Megan Hendricks.

Friday’s action saw us up against the top Kootenay team, the Rovers from Cranbrook.  After the Rovers took a 1-0 lead in the first half, KU came back in the second half with a beautifully placed shot by Victoria Dauncey-Elwood to tie up the game.  With about 5 minutes, left Hailey Blaskovits placed a perfectly taken direct kick into the outside left corner to give us the lead.   With less than a minute left, the Kootenay team had their own direct kick from just outside the 18. An equally great shot into the top right corner, however, our keeper, Chloe Grayson, did a single handed tip over the bar to keep our winning streak going.

Game three had us up against a very strong North Shore team.  We got lucky in the first half when the North Shore defender tipped one of our shots into their own net.  By the end of the first half we were up 2-0 after Sydney Solland fought for the ball in the 18 and put it into the net.  In the second half, the North Shore came back very strong and tied the game at 2-2.  We finished the round robin play with 7 of 9 possible points and a trip to the gold medal finals.

Our gold medal match was against the Gordon Head team from Victoria.  It was a great match up with two teams that were there to win.  They battled back and forth all game.  Gordon Head took the first lead when they capitalized on a penalty kick.  We came back quickly when Ashley Pfeifer knocked in a corner kick from Victoria Dauncey-Elwood.  Gordon Head answered quickly and took a 2-1 lead. During Gordon Head’s second goal Chloe Grayson, our keeper, was knocked down and stepped on.  What we didn’t know was that she was hurt and still managed to finish the game with a fractured wrist.  A few minutes later we suffered a similar agony that the English team went through at the world cup, when Shelby Dane’s direct kick went in but was not counted.  The girls fought hard but couldn’t equal the score.  The girls had an amazing season and proudly accepted their silver medals.  Well done girls, thank you to all of the parents, community and KU staff for all of the support throughout the season.
