KU BU14 A - Calgary U 16 Girls Result: 3 - 2 ( 1 - 2 )
Goal scorers: Josh Ugyan; Liam Duncan; Mathew Fielding
1st Half;
The KU U14 A boys played their second game of the weekend against a visiting Calgary U16 girls team. The Calgary team set the pace early by opening the scoring on a penalty kick within the first few minutes. They then followed up with a second quick goal on a break away. Determined to get in the game, the KU boys went on the offensive and were rewarded when midfielder Ayo Fashanu beat the defense and tapped the ball to forward Josh Ugyan for KU’s first goal.
2nd Half;
The second half saw a determined KU fight back against the defensive wall of the Calgary team. Fashanu created the second scoring opportunity with a through ball to centremid Matthew Fielding who passed to a waiting Liam Duncan to tie the game 2-2. The Calgary team continued to press but were unable to beat the solid defensive line of Ayden Ledding, Walker Shanks, Joe Overton, Matthew VanDenHeuvel and Kurtis Knuth. KU moved the ball well making several runs at the goal . However, the Calgary defenders forced KU offside several times including their next goal which was disallowed. KU kept up the pressure and clinched the win with their final goal by midfielder Fielding on a pass from Duncan. The stellar defensive effort by Walker Shanks earned him Best Player of the match.

KU Boys U14 B - Calgary NSD Girls U 16 2 - 1 (1 - 0)
Goals; Tristin Croteau, Nick Morel
Opp; Unknown
Kelowna United's Boys U 14 B started this contest against a solid and well balanced Calgary team on a high note with an early goal from Tristin Croteau.
The rest of the half was merely a defending effort by KU with lots of possession and decent scoring opportunities for the visiting Calgary team. Curtis Bailey had a stellar performance in goal with a handful of high class saves. KU lost possession time after time and very seldom reached the dangerous areas behind the Calgary defenders who played with a very organized offside trap defense which fooled the KU boys a dozen times!
The second half followed the same pattern, with nice play by Calgary where they spread the field and used the full width time after time! Curtis and a hard working defense with Karnjot and Reid playing solidly kept the Calgary team at bay until a hard long range shot found the net behind a diving Curtis. After the equalizer KU fought back and combined on a few great chances, where one of them found Dylan Wagner, whose superb header found the crossbar before the rebound was cleared out of danger.
In the last minutes, KU beat the offside trap and Liam Sweeney sprinted toward the goalkeeper. His shot deflected off the post out to an unmarked Nick Morel who blasted the winner into an empty net.
In summary the game was won by a hard working team and a great fighting spirit and never-give-up attitude!
3 stars - Curtis Bailey, Many excellent saves throughout the game.
2 stars - Reid Lobson, Good defense position and held his ground well against the oppositions flying attacks.
1 star - Phillip Schrud, Played smart and held his cool with good passing.
KU Boys U14B - Shuswap U14 0-2 (0-1)
Having defeated a strong Calgary U16 girls team the day previous, Kelowna went into this game full of confidence. However, with several injured players enforcing changes upon the team, victory in this game was always far from a certainty.
Kelowna started brightly, but a misunderstanding in a changed defensive line lead to Shuswap scoring an early goal. Kelowna continued to dominate the possession, with good work on both flanks from Schrod and Dickie, but chances remained few and far between. Kelowna came close to equalizing just before half time, with several half chances not quite finding the net.
The second half was a more open affair, with both teams playing more quick counter-attacking soccer. Kelowna’s defence was once again breached on the hour mark, as the excellent Shuswap striker cut through and smashed home passed Bailey. To their credit, Kelowna continued to battle hard, but on this occasion they were unable to turn good possession into goal scoring chances. At the other end, Bailey made several important saves and some good defending kept the home team from further adding to their total.
In summary, in spite of the disappointing result, the boys continue to make progress, with a number of them adapting well to playing unfamiliar positions.
Ratings
*** Liam Sweeney - great battling display and adapted well to playing central defence.
**Harrison Argatoff - a solid performance in his less preferred position.
* Curtis Bailey - excellent saves in the last part of the match

FYI The U15 B’s have not been in the paper at all this year so I wrote a separate story about them.
U15 B’s on a roll!
After a 4-0 win against Vernon and a 2-1 victory versus Penticton, Sunday saw the Kelowna U15’s attempting to keep the winning streak in league play alive against the Shuswap squad. Alex Myshak-Davis was playing her second game back from Injury but Jessica Mackelden and Hanna Caldwell were not fit to play leaving just a 13 player squad to make the journey.
The field conditions were poor , and the Kelowna squad got off to a slow to start. Resolute defensive play kept them even early. Natatsha Remez picked up were her partner in goal Caldwell left off in the previous league game. Remez was stellar keeping a clean sheet in the first half. Somewhat against the run of play, Kaesha Lazar from Winfield opened the scoring. Her fourth goal of the season was similar to the three pervious, as she burst through the defence controlling the ball at very high speed and ending with a clinical finish.
In the second half Kelowna settled into their normal pattern of play to dominate the game. The second goal was scored by Megan Johansen, her third of the season. It came as a result of great work out wide by Savannah Gellner. Gellner put in her normal outstanding effort and was rewarded with a goal of her own just minutes later. The only Shuswap goal came from a late penalty.
After the game coach Steven Bergg commented on the fixture and the season so far.
“The girls did not play their best today but got a result. They continue to keep their shape and be smart defensively. That will win you close games and allow you to steal a few along the way. Next week they will have to be better against Kamloops, and they will be. This is a great group of girls, it’s nice to see them picking up maximum points from the first three. "
