Kelowna United 3 Shuswap 2 (1-0)
Sweeney (22), Shuswap OG (44), Croteau (52)
Kelowna United kick started their season with a convincing win over rivals Shuswap. On the familiar home field of the MissionTurf, Kelowna largely dominated, and in contrast to previous weeks, this time they got what they deserved.
Kelowna took control of the game from the beginning with Wagner and Croteau testing the Shuswap goalkeeper early on. The breakthrough finally came on 22 minutes when some intricate passing on the right hand side led to a perfectly weighted pass to Sweeney who smashed the ball home.
The home team continued to assert control over the game and some good work on the left hand side led to an impossible ball being played into the box, and with Wagner in hot pursuit, the Shuswap defender had no choice but to head past his own keeper! In spite of the setback, Shuswap came back into the game shortly after with a nice headed goal from a front post corner. However, this goal only served to further inspire Kelowna who soon restored the 2 goal lead thanks to some good close finishing from Croteau.
Shuswap managed to score again with a break away goal, but Kelowna held on to secure a much deserved first league win of the season.
